an 18th birthday cake for May

This is the birthday cake I made for May’s 18th birthday. The briefing conversation included the words:
outrageous, arty, gothic, memorable, wacky… and with a loose underlying midsummer night’s dream theme (so love and magic, forests and fairies, and that’s without getting on to star-crossed lovers, rude mechanicals and a whole host of other things. I think May and her friends were going off to see Opera North’s production of the Dream that evening)
This was the result… Making it wasn’t a dream. In fact it was a bit of a nightmare. It was the hottest day of the year (possibly the only hot day of the year!) and nothing was setting. Even when putting the cake together, the fillings were so soft that the layers were sliding off each other… . I think I probably swore more in that period of 6 hours than I have in the rest of the year.
However, the end product was rather fab, in a slightly scary way… and I think it hit the spot. Phew.
I love pictures of things we make in context. Here’s a beautiful photo of the lovely May with her bonkers birthday cake.

Thanks to Mike Barrett for the photos
